Alrewas

Alrewas is one of the largest villages in Staffordshire and is situated approximately 5 miles from the major conurbation of Lichfield. Alrewas has a population of just under 3000 people and is set in the stunning surroundings of the River Trent and the Trent and Mersey Canal. Until recently Alrewas was the seat of the Bishop of Lichfield, a position of some prestige. Alrewas maintains excellent transport links with surrounding areas thanks to the local A38 that follows the historic route of the Roman built Ryknild Street. Alrewas is a aprt of the civil parish of Alrewas and Fradley, and is neighbours with the villages of Barton-under-Needwood, Fradley and Kings Bromley.

The name "Alrewas" is derived from "Alder Wash", a name for a kind of swamp in which Alder trees would grow around the flood plains near the site where the village is now located. Alrewas is reknowned for its stunning beauty and picturesque setting near the River Trent, the village traces its roots back hundreds of years and still maintains a large portion of original historic architecture thanks to many half timbered thatched cottages lining the Main Street, the old mill in the North of the village and the historic 12th Century church. Alrewas is located just inside the National Forest and the vast majority of the village and its surroundings are protected conservation areas.

The Trent and Mersey canal lends the village a charming hustle and bustle thanks to the many locks and bridges crossing the canal itself; the canal was constructed between 1770 and 1777 and is England's first commercial canal system. In 2004 Alrewas had the honour of being named the Best Kept Village in the district and in 2005 it was elected to represent the region of Staffordshire in the Calor Village of the Year Competition. Alrewas is a friendly and charming village thanks to the local community; many community groups are run each week and there are a number of clubs and activities designed to entertain all ages, and many are open for local and visitor alike.
