Burton on Trent
Burton on Trent is one of the larger towns in the Staffordshire area. It sits upon the River Trent to the east of the region and people who live in Burton on Trent refer to themselves as "Burtonian". One of the main things that Burton on Trent is widely known for is the towns history as a centre for brewing excellence. This history as a brewing location began with Burton on Trent Abbey, the monastery of Saint Modwen which had evolved into a bustling and important market location by the end of the mediaeval period.
Burton on Trent was an important location thanks to its bridge that spanned the River Trent, according to the abbot it functioned as "a comen passage to
and fro many countries to the grett releff and comfort of travellyng
people". The last census recorded that Burton on Trent contained a population of 60,500 people making it one of the largest towns population wise in Staffordshire. Burton on Trent also sits in the National Forest, something that makes it an attractive location for tourists and people visiting the area. One of the main reasons that Burton on Trent is associated with the brewing industry is that the local water is remarkably pure and contains a high amount of dissolved salts thanks to the gypsum in the surrounding hills. This allows more hops to be included in the beer (hops is a natural preservative) which historically allowed the beer to be transported greater distances without spoiling. To this day the town maintains a strict policy on chemicals being used in the local area to preserve the water quality that the town was founded upon. Burton on Trent has grown from strength to strength throughout the decades and this has continued in recent times, the town is vital to the Staffordshire economy and is full of attractions and activities that make it popular with local and tourist alike.
