Fishing in Staffordshire

Whether you are fly fishing or fresh water fishing, Staffordshire is a fantastic county in which to take part in this most relaxing and popular of sports. There are reservoirs, lakes, canals and rivers along the side of which you can lazily pass the time indulging in one of the nation’s favourite pastimes.

The Caldon Canal lays claim to the title of England's most scenic waterway - and no one benefits more from its picturesque location than Staffordshire's anglers.

As well as peaceful views and rural surroundings, the Caldon Canal offers a variety of fish such as bream, roach, perch and carp.

High quality angling can also be found on the Trent & Mersey Canal to suit both serious match and pleasure anglers. Roach, gudgeon and perch feed freely, and on a fine summer's evening you can catch carp and bream.

Trout fishing is also popular in Staffordshire in Staff with both rainbow and brown trout available at private fly-fishing venues across the county.

There are many privately-owned fisheries where you can buy a day ticket or even a longer pass so that you can really make the most of fishing in Staffordshire.

If you are a novice and would like to know more about Fishing in Staffordshire there are individual teachers or fishing clubs in the county that will provide private tuition and the chances are that you will soon be hooked.

If you are not fishing in Staffordshire on a permit or day ticket from a fishing or angling club then anyone (over 12) who fishes for salmon, trout, freshwater fish or eels must have an Environment Agency Rod Fishing Licence. Rod licences can be purchased from any Post Office in England and Wales.

Top tips for environmentally friendly fishing

Experienced anglers know that it's really important to protect the wild environment within which they fish. Spotting wildlife can really add to the experience of a fishing trip, but damage can easily be done to wild habitats. Below are five ways that you as a responsible angler can reduce the impact that your activities have on the environment.

1.       Take litter home

2.       Use non-toxic weights

3.       Handle fish with care and respect

4.       Take care with fishing line

5.       Use barbless hooks
