Keele

Keele is a small village and civil parish located in the northern parts of the Staffordshire region. It is situated just three miles from Newcastle-under-Lyme and is very close to the village of Silverdale. The word Keele is derived from the Anglo-Saxon Cy-hyll (or cow-hill), and interestingly the village is featured on the modern versions of the "here and now" release of the popular board game Monopoly, taking the place of Fleet Street. The 2001 census recorded the parish of Keele as containing 3,664 people, the vast majority of whom were students at the local Keele University.

The University is both the major draw to the village and also the major employer, it was the first new UK university established in the 20th century and gained its power to grant degrees in 1949 as part of the University College of North Staffordshire. It was granted full university status as the University of Keele in 1962 and has gone from strength to strength ever since. Keele University was founded in an effort to promote interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary scholarship and features a broad and varied choice of courses for students to choose from. It is also the UK's largest integrated campus and occupies a 617 acre estate with Grade II listings from English Heritage.
