Penkridge

Penkridge is a historic market town with a population of just under 8,000 people situated in Staffordshire. It is one of the newest towns in the area and many people still refer to it as a village. Penkridge is situated close to Wolverhampton and Stafford making it a popular location with commuters, and Penkridge takes its name from the River Penk that flows through the town itself. There are a number of historic sites around the Penkridge area including the market that can trace it's roots back hundreds of years and is open every Wednesday and every Saturday.

St. Michael's church is considered one of the best examples of a Grade I listed church in the country and is a popular destination for both locals and tourists. If you are in the area in November then be sure to pay a visit to the Victorian Christmas Market and enjoy the historic sights and sounds, and while you are in Penkridge why not pay a visit to the historical stocks and prison cells that can be viewed int he town centre?

Local legend claims that King Edgar made Penkridge his capital (and henceforth the capital of England) for three years whilst he was busy reconquering the Danelaw. This claim is disputed by many, however to this day the town retains many links with it's royal past; Queen Elizabeth would visit regularly and enjoy walks along the river whilst lodging at the White Hart Inn.
