Perton
Perton is situated in South Staffordshire, just to the west of Wolverhampton and to the south of Codsall. Perton evolved from a small, humble row of houses that were erected along the road from Wolverhampton to Pattingham along a hilltop that was known as Perton Ridge. It is believed that the name Perton comes from the concept of a "Pear Town" due to the number of pear trees that used to grow in the region.
Many people are tempted to regard Perton as a suburb of Wolverhampton but this is not geographically correct and Perton is a charming village well worth a visit in its own right. The area saw a rapid expansion in the 1970's and 1980's when a new housing development was constructed atop a former RAF station, the population of this now totals 12,000 people making it one of the most successful new developments in the 20th century. If you fancy yourself as something of a strong-man then Perton might be the perfect place to visit; each year the village hosts the Tough Guy Competition, considered by many to be the world's most demanding one day survival ordeal.
The village has also benefited from the recent housing boom and is now seen by many as an affluent area. It is astonishing to consider how far the village has evolved when you think about its humble beginnings as a row of houses on a hilltop.
