Tamworth
Tamworth is a town situated 14 miles from Birmingham and a mere 103 miles from London making it very centrally located in the UK. Tamworth takes its name from the River Tame that flows through the town along with the River Anker. Tamworth is home to a variety of historic buildings including the local Castle and the Moat House, and for tourists the Snowdome (Western Europe's first real-snow indoor ski-slope) is located in the town.
Drayton Manor Theme Park is also situated close to the town making it an excellent alternative to those who would normally attempt to visit Alton Towers. Tamworth has existed since Saxon times and for a short period it was the capital of Mercia, the largest of all English kingdoms. Throughout the years it has been the largest town in the Midlands mostly due to its important strategic location at the confluence of two rivers (the Tame and the Anker). In the 9th century the invading Danes attacked the town leading to the construction of a wooden fort.
When the Normans arrived in the 11th century they updated the Tamworth wooden forst to a genuine castle which still stands today and is a major tourist attraction. Throughout the middle ages Tamworth functioned as a market town attracting trade and caravans, however in 1345 much of the town was destroyed in a large fire. Gradually this the area was rebuilt only to suffer the devestating affects of the plague in the 16th and 17th centuries. Tamworth is a town with a varied and intriguing history and a wide variety of historical sites to visit during your stay.
