Voice for local youths

Posted on Thursday, 02 October 2008 11:40AM by Editor
Burton and Uttoxeter are taking part in a pioneering scheme that aims to give more of a voice to local youths. The Staffordshire Youth Service is leading this unique project in an attempt to develop an East Staffordshire Shadow Trust Board made up solely of children and young people from the Burton and Uttoxeter Youth Forums.

This board will report directly to the East Staffordshire Children's Trust Board and help raise issues concerning young people and awareness of childrens rights in the area. The emphasis of the scheme is on establishing links with children and young people throughout school councils and voluntary groups. An event took place at 9am in Burton Town Hall that aimed to enlist the support of local schools so that they can form a part of the consultation network.

The deputy mayor of East Staffordshire Geoff Morrison was present to hear the views of the young people who attended. Every school that signs up to the scheme will also sign a pledge outlining their commitment to supporting the shadow board and making sure young people are consulted at every opportunity.
